Carrière Frères Industrie

These candles not only look and smell beautiful but have an interesting history. Carrière Frères Industrie was founded in 1884 in Paris, by two inquisitive and entrepreneurial brothers. It was the beginning of the industrial revolution that the Carrière brothers pioneered a new era of wax-making – they created a candle that burned for 6 hours, with a constant beam of light and without smoke. Their work was awarded and this saw the generic indoor candle turn into an object of comfort and quality. They sourced the finest waxes, and most durable wicks and worked closely with their interest in botanics to bring a range of quality candles to the masses. This wax is still being used today – they are smoke-free, long burning and free of any paraffin’s or petrochemicals. Inspired by exotic botanical oil scents include sandalwood, lilly of the valley, firebrand and cotton flower!

If you’ve wandered down Therry Street lately and been past the store you can’t have missed the giant carrot in the window. After Store teamed up with talented artist Dawn Tan as part of Melbounre’s Look Stop Shop program – a retail discovery through art and design. With Dawns wonderful painting, illustrating, making and crazy ideas skills the carrot spans across all 4 windows, is over 7 metres in length and is detailed with a really cool, intricate aztec pattern. Be sure to come and check it out – its one pretty big carrot so you can’t miss it!

The Himba

Somewhere deep in Namibia live the Himba people – a true nomadic tribe who adorn themselves in amazing jewellery made of copper, iron, shells, leather and other materials they find. They wear little clothing, often made of goat skin and cover themselves in a thick ochre for protection against the harsh dessert climate. Their traditional life has far from been adapted to the modern world, however trade of jewellery for money and other goods is common. We sourced these rare bangles from a man who trades directly with the Himba – some still covered in red ochre, they are carved with beautiful and intricate tribal patterns and a collection of them is available in store.
